An independent study published in The Lancet suggests that Eisai/Pfizer’s blockbuster Aricept (donepezil) is only minimally-effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and therefore not a cost-effective therapy for the condition.

Donepezil has been tested in other cognitive disorders including Lewy body dementia and Vascular dementia, but it is not currently approved for these indications. Donepezil has also been studied in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment, schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder, post-coronary bypass cognitive impairment, cognitive impairment associated with multiple sclerosis, and Down syndrome. A 3 year NIH trial in patients with mild cognitive impairment reported that donepezil was superior to placebo in delaying rate of progression to dementia during the initial 18 months of the study but this was not sustained at 36 months. In a secondary analyses, a subgroup of individuals with the Apolipoprotein E4 genotype showed sustained benefits with donepezil throughout the study. However at this time donepezil is not indicated for prevention of dementia.

Missouri doctor testifies about Internet practice before state medical board

A Missouri pathologist who calls himself an Internet medicine specialist defended his state medical license Wednesday in a hearing at the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts.

Dr. Miles Jones, of Independence, Mo., who testified that he prescribes medicines, including Viagra, from the Web sites maleclinic.com and netdr.com, faces three counts of violating the Kansas Healing Arts Act. Since 1998, Jones said he has made more than 30,000 prescriptions via the Internet.

Levitra is a PDE5 inhibitor just like Viagra. PDE5 inhibitors are a type of drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction. They are very effective oral treatments available for erectile dysfunction. Although Levitra and Viagra have the same roles, their chemical structures are different. Viagra’s chemical name is Sildenafil and Levitra’s chemical name is Vardenafil. Viagra is marketed by Pfizer and Levitra is marketed by Bayer AG.

This shortened range time allows men to better time their drug ingestion, compared to Viagra which has a large range of “30 minutes to 4 hours”

Levitra has been, in rare cases to cause penile tissue damage and permanent impotence. Viagra’s common side effects are nausea, headache, dizziness, rash, itch and photophobia (the fear of light), while its dangerous side effects are priapism, low blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks and sudden death. There have been news stories about Viagra causing blindness as well in rare cases.

With this information we can see that Levitra might not be the best Viagra alternative, as there are Viagra alternatives that will cause no side effects at all.

The US Federal Drug Administration has forced GlaxoSmithKline to include a “black box” warning on the diabetes drug Avandia because of scares over the increased risk of congestive heart failure. Sales of Avandia have fallen by 40 per cent since the FDA investigated allegations of cardiovascular side-effects.

Two studies and an editorial today should lead the Food and Drug Administration to pull the diabetes pill Avandia off the market, the authors say.

“Taken together, it’s going to put a lot of pressure on the FDA to act,” says Steven Nissen, the cardiovascular medicine chief at the Cleveland Clinic and co-author of one study, which appears in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Nissen raised concerns about Avandia’s heart attack risk in May with a study in The New England Journal of Medicine. It pooled results of 42 short-term clinical trials and found that Avandia patients were 43% more likely to have a heart attack or be hospitalized for blocked coronary arteries than other patients.

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration gave its approval to AstraZeneca’s controversial cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor last month after a lengthy debate over the product’s side effects and safety. The drug, chemically known as rosuvastatin, is the sixth statin drug to be approved for managing cholesterol levels.

Crestor, the most powerful of the cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, causes more side effects than its weaker cousins and should be considered only after other drugs have been tried, researchers said Monday.

The study is the latest stumbling block for Crestor, launched by AstraZeneca in 2003, which had hoped it would compete with market leader Lipitor, made by Pfizer. Last year, it was one of several drugs FDA scientist David Graham said deserved further scrutiny, and it recently survived a challenge from an advocacy group seeking to have it removed from the market.

In the long list of medications that I have had the displeasure to experience, Nexium is another one that tops the list. I’ve been personally battling against antacids for as long as I can remember, ever since I discovered how dangerous these drugs are. Nexium is probably one of the worst offenders as ultimately all it does is treat the symptom rather than the actual cause of the problem, which invariably comes down to diet. In this article, we’re going to reveal the common uses for Nexium, what it does, the dangers it presents and finally some natural and effective altermatives.

Nexium is the brand name for the drug Esomeprazole. It is available by prescription only and is commonly prescribed for acid reflux disease, which is mostly caused by poor diet. As a matter of fact, the drug itself even states that it only treats the symptoms such as heartburn and acid indigestion.

If it were just a matter of having to deal with minor side effects such as headache, diarrhea, nausea, gas, stomach pain, constipation, or dry mouth, taking this drug wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, though there are certainly better alternatives. The bigger problem is the serious side effects that can occur from this drug which include severe stomach pain, persistent nausea, vomiting, dark urine, and with long term use, vitamin B 12 deficiency, which can cause a myriad of problems by itself.

The makers of Nexium state the your doctor is prescribing this drug for you because he feels the benefits outweigh the potential risks. That’s a euphemistic way of saying “Even though this drug may kill you, we feel it beats having heartburn.” Personally, I’d rather have a little heartburn.

If it sounds like I am down on the drug companies, I am. Drugs almost killed me. Today, I live a healthy, all natural life style and don’t have to take one drop of medication. Nexium was one of the first things that I said goodbye to as it almost killed me. Today, with a sensible diet and regular exercise, I don’t recall the last time I even had to burp, let alone have heartburn, which used to wake me up just about every night.
